当某设备受到外部震动冲击时，设备中的气动避震元器件会因为气体的可压缩性，对冲击产生的能量进行吸收，主要转换为压缩空气的内能储存起来。当外部震动减退时，储存的内能再以动能的形式，通过避震元器件运动而释放出去，从而减轻或消除震动冲击。其作用如同避震弹簧，只是弹簧的变形被气体体积的缩胀取代。
气动避震是安装在汽车上面的一种空气悬挂减震器，是用橡胶空气减震器代替原车的弹簧减震器，使车身高度自由升降，越野路面车身可以升高，高速上车身可以降低，安装了气动避震的车子通过性很好，减震性能和舒适性都比原车的好很多。
